Spooky St. Patrick’s Party

You all know I love Halloween, but I do enjoy holidays and reasons to celebrate in general. And since Valentine’s is often a small, personal occasion, by the time St. Patrick’s day has rolled around, it’s been over 3 months since my last big party (New Year’s).

This year I decided to go all out for my St. Patrick’s Day party by taking a rather different approach. I’ll be throwing a Spooky St. Patty’s Party. Of course. Because once a year is not enough for Halloween to come around.

The first things that come to mind when it comes to March 17th are smiling leprachauns, the color green, and possibly raucous crowds over-indulging a bit much. I want to bring out the dark (but still fun) side of the holiday. Here’s how I plan to do it.

Theme

Since St. Patrick’s day is such a jovial holiday, I felt like “Scary St. Patty’s Party” might not offer enough direction for some of my guests. So when I sent out the invitations, I made a couple of things clear. First of all, this is a costume party. Guests are welcome to come dressed as their favorite spooky creature from Irish folklore. Just in case they had trouble thinking of some, I listed a few.

  • Leprechauns-Those guys can be downright creepy tricksters if you think about it. In some myths, they use telekinesis to make people’s hearts explode!
  • Dark Faeries- From the Fairy Queen to Mischievous Pixies, Faeries can offer a lot of spooky inspiration.
  • Selkies- These part seal creatures can shed their skins to take on the form of beautiful humans. Though not particularly threatening, their beauty can be quite off-putting.
  • Kelpies-Appearing as beautiful horses, Kelpies attract innocent children with the intention of drowning them. This could be a great costume for a couple!
  • Banshees- Though Banshees do not kill, they appear before death, and so are creepy in much the same way as the grim reaper. They also utter an unearthly moaning that is worthy of any Halloween ghoul.

After arming my guests with these ideas, I encouraged them to dress up by offering a prize for best costume. It will just be a nice gift basket with some St. Patrick’s themed snacks and a copy of “Leprechaun” the cheesy-scary film from the 90s.

Snacks

Speaking of snacks, the food for my party will go a long way in establishing the theme. Though corned beef and cabbage can be scary, I’m going for a more literal approach. I have a Bailey’s crème chocolate cheesecake that I am decorating with a leprechaun stalking a pot of gold. I’m taking inspiration from the Kelpie and putting little lego figurines (sanitized, of course) in the bottom of my drink glasses.

I’m also utilizing the holiday granted color-scheme and adding some green food coloring to white chocolate for a salty-sweet popcorn snack. I may even try to shape the popcorn balls like clovers, but we’ll see how ambitious I get.

Decorations

My house will be dim for the event, with green accent lighting and forest décor. Irish folklore is all about the dangers of nature, so that is at the heart of my design. I have a few threatening-looking tree figurines that will be prominently displayed.

Activities

This will mostly be a social activity so that I can catch up with some friends who love celebrations as much as I do. Besides the costume contest, I will not have any planned “activities” for the night. I will be playing Celtic music in the background and have some of my Irish poetry and folklore sitting around so that people have something to thumb through during the night.

I’m hoping my take on a Spooky St. Patrick’s Day will be a success. Do you have any plans for this Irish Celebration? Do you ever try to mix holidays like I’m doing with this Halloween/St. Patty’s mash-up?

Set the Tone with Dias de los Muertos

Set the Tone with Dias de los Muertos

Thinking forward to this year’s Halloween costume? I am…

This is a prize winning costume I am sharing with you so that you no longer need to wrack your brain to figure something out! I must say, this turned out pretty amazing…

This gal decided that “The Day of the Dead” was perfectly fitting for her theme this last year, but just the tone of “Dias de los Muertos” makes it sound all the more eerie, spooky even. So how did she pull this one off?

This costume will probably take you about three hours to complete. Here are the parts and pieces:

  •  The dress was a period style zombie wedding gown.
  • The scarf/shawl  can be found at a local Walgreens store. That is a small drugstore, if you don’t have one.
  • Made the headdress using a plastic headband and six big roses, all hot glued onto the headband.
  • White face paint
  • Baby Powder
  • White eyeliner
  • Black eyeliner
  • A palette of several shades and colors of eye shadow
  • Faceted decorative jewels
  • Black nail polish
  • False eyelashes
  • Eyelash adhesive
  • Various eye shadow brushes

This gal got up at 4:30am to be able to make it to work by 7:00am. She was 30 minutes late. Plan accordingly! The tutorial used to paint herself up only lasted eight minutes so she thought an hour was plenty of time! It was not.

Dress after you shower and brush your teeth before applying makeup. Be certain you are starting with a clean face. Use a headband to hold your hair away from your face.

Here is the tutorial this gal followed. It is a great one. And yes, she did the makeup all by herself. It was pretty easy! If you don’t have things like stage makeup and fancy brushes, you can make do with clown makeup, baby powder, and a few brushes. She bought a compact of shadows at Target. It was a smaller size. She didn’t use the feather eyelashes, she just accented with longer ones. She also did not put makeup on her lips, she used the white eye liner instead so it would last longer.

Once you finish your makeup, put the shawl over your head like a veil. Place the headdress of roses over the shawl to hold it in place. A pair of some old fashioned looking boots would top the whole thing off. Painting your nails the night before saves time in the morning and you can fix any errors before you start to run low on time in the morning.

The costume turned out amazing. It is a contest contender for certain! The thing about costumes is that many of them are uncomfortable and you want to just get out of it before the fun ever starts! This one wore very well, she touched up the liner once during the day, but everything else was perfectly comfortable. Give it a shot! You will be amazed at how simple it is!

Put a Little Gothic Vampire into your Valentine’s Day

When people talk about being Gothic, we picture the heavy black makeup, the solid black clothes, the raggedy black hair, chains, snakes, thick jewelry, and pale white skin. When we think of gothic side of the Victorian times, we think of handsome men killing others to drink their blood, fancy lacy gowns, dark castles of grey stone and gargoyles. What we have lost in translation over the years is how romantic the Victorian Gothic era really was. This year for Valentine’s Day, give it a try. Incorporate the very romantic gothic theme and see how you connect with your partner.

Invite Your Partner

  • Leave a special invitation for your partner asking them to join you for a night of romance as you embrace that primal, powerful side that we all possess. Be creative by writing on a lacy handkerchief, using lipstick on the mirror, or kissing a notecard and scrawling a note. Make it fun, alluring and even a little sexy!
  • Drop no hints before the evening and keep your shopping or ideas hidden.
  • Make it clear to your partner to arrive in character! Get in touch with that smooth, sensual vampiric side of yourselves!

Decide Your Color Scheme and Décor

  • The classic colors associated with the Gothic times are red, black, white, gray, and purple…The deep colors that are full of feeling. They strike emotions inside of you when they are grouped together.
  • A staple activity of Valentine’s Day is the ever romantic dinner for two. Decide whether or not you will decorate the bedroom and even the bath as well. However, the dinner adds something to the night. A time for flirting and dancing.
  • Black tapers in a candelabra, red candles in jars, and even tealights add to the drama of the evening. Burn your tapers ahead of time for a drippy effect. Lights should be out except for your candles or maybe even some rope lights for effect. Skin appears flawless and glowing in the candlelight. Be sure, though, that you can see where you are going. No one wants to trip and fall in the darkness.
  • A fog machine can lend a spooky feel to your night with a vampire. It doesn’t take much, mind you, so if you have a machine just turn it on for a few minutes to ensure you don’t smoke your partner out!
  • Feathers have that soft and timeless romance associated with them. Use red or black boas as décor or groups of feathers in floral arrangements with black or burgundy roses.
  • Items like solid tablecloths and bold patterned plates can be accented by metallic accessories such as keys.
  • Set the table formally. When was the last time you both had a fancy dinner out together?

  • Play music in the background. Classical pieces that prompt dancing are the best for the mood. Perhaps make a CD or a playlist of songs that relate to your relationship. Nostalgia is a powerful tool.

The Menu

  • The most romantic dinner to share with a partner is fondue. There are different kinds of fondue you can enjoy together, but the most common is cheese for dipping and breads, fruit, and meat to eat. For dessert, melted chocolate frosting makes a wonderful dip for fruit, angel food cake, and marshmallows.
  • Spontaneously feed your partner from your own fork. That can be a most romantic way to spend the evening together.
  • Choose a red drink, whether it is fruit juice or wine, to be the blood. It just sets the mood!

  • Prepare your meal ahead of time so you don’t have to spend all of your time in the kitchen. You can just grab and go.
  • Red Velvet cake is delicious and fits the theme very well. Perhaps tiny cupcakes to graze on later if you are doing fondue!

The Dress Code

  • Have fun with this! You can do a full vampire costume or something as simple as a corset and skirt. Men can wear a dress shirt and tie. Whatever you choose, feel beautiful in it! Let go of your inhibitions and surrender to your vampire.
  • Be functional, you will still need to move around and if you decide to go to a movie, you don’t want mothers to have to shield their children’s eyes from you.
  • Leave something to the imagination. There is usually more to come on the most romantic day of the year. Make your partner wonder a little…
  • Vampires are sensual, romantic, and possess powers to attract any being they choose. Play the part and cast your spell.

The Agenda

  • Decide ahead of time what you want to do. Stay at home and watch Dracula movies? Go out and see a romance? What about the soon to be released, “Warm Bodies”?
  • Perhaps a warm dip in a bubble bath is more your thing. Don’t spend that time rehashing your day. Spend it reminiscing about some awesome times you have shared. Big bubbles, music, and flickering candles will enhance the mood.
  • Before the night is over, be certain your partner doesn’t get away without a nibble on the neck!

There are so many possibilities in bringing a little Halloween into your home throughout the year! Step out of your normal routine and create a very special atmosphere with minimal effort.

Bringing The Holiday Costume Spirit To Thanksgiving

UNISEX ADULT FLEECE TURKEY COSTUME

With another incredibly Halloween holiday behind me for the year, I almost went into a little bit of a depression. But, the thing that I love the absolute most about Halloween is the fun get togethers, the holiday atmosphere and especially dressing up in costume. Besides that, if I can’t blog about costumes, I might have to take up another hobby, and with so many, it would likely have to be some sort of exercise related hobby and no one wants that. Okay, actually you might want that, but I’d prefer to avoid those workout clothes! At any rate, I’ve decided to dedicate my passion for costumes year-round, so I’ll be posting about seasonal and other holiday related costumes ( I know, if it’s not Halloween…).

So, this post is dedicated to our next national holiday: Thanksgiving. You may not think of it as an opportunity to dress up, but it is. You could let all of the kids attending your holiday soiree act out the first Thanksgiving for your guests, for instance. Or have an uncle dress up in turkey costume to greet your grandkids as they arrive. Schools and teachers are always on the lookout for people to help out during class holiday parties and just think of the hit you’ll be if you arrive at your son’s kindergarten class in full pilgrim gear. Kids love it and sometimes they learn a little something, too.

This year, why not make your Thanksgiving all the more festive with a little extra holiday cheer from an inspired costume.

Happy Holidays!

Ghosts, Monsters, Vampires, Mummies & A Stray Black Cat

As spirits roam the neighborhoods at night,
Let loose upon the Earth till it be light…

~Nicholas Gordon

Halloween Eve has finally arrived and I can honestly say that I think this year’s festivities are going to go down in the history books as the darkest, most intensely celebrated wickedness yet. I guess you could say I’m a very excited about it. As I make the final preparations for my Halloween spectacle this evening, my thoughts turn to the real stars of the holiday. The classic villains that exist to frighten the daylights out of us once a year. [Insert a maniacal Vincent Price laugh here.]

the rest of the year I prefer hard facts, scientific evidence and logic, at Halloween, half the fun of the thing is our collective descent into the realm of our darkest fears.  A place where ghosts walk the streets, monsters wait under beds to grab our ankles with icy fingers and the threat of a death-kiss from a vampire is always just minutes away. With such foreboding of both delight and terror, it’s going to be dreadful getting to sleep tonight. Ah well, I’ll sleep when I’m dead, as they say. Actually that’s doubtful since I’d be more apt to do do something much more entertaining, like come and haunt all of you…

Which brings me to our fears…tomorrow, my suggestion is to live it up as though you hadn’t a care in the world, but you’ll know the truth. You’re just as scared as the rest of us are. No point in hiding it.

Tomorrow, I suggest we all take the opportunity to express those cold, dark poisons, those fears we can’t escape…. you may not make it through the night without a delicious fright anyway, so the best course is to let that adrenaline coursing through your veins take hold and scream at the thing that scares you most.

Happy haunting my pretties!

A Grisly Ghost Story

In the small town I grew up in, there was a nice little neighborhood, and in that nice little neighborhood, was a vacant home lot that was partitioned off from the rest of the area by large metal walls, and naturally, this peaked the curiosity of the people in the area.

Rumor had it that a couple had lived there and the house was vacant too long after the family moved away so the city fenced it up. But that didn’t explain the why the land was never sold, or why the fence was so high. Being a teen in a too-few-things-to-do city inspired some interesting forays for myself and my friends. And one chilly fall night, we dedicated ourselves to finding out the mystery. I almost wish we hadn’t, since it’s so horrible, but these urban myths and legends are what ghost stories are made of…

Once upon a time, in the history of a very small city in the middle of the United States, there lived a young little family, a mother who made cookies, a father who worked for the  postal service, and a three young kids, each with their father’s chocolate eyes and their mother’s soft, blonde curls.

These were back in the horse and buggy days, and their home was just one of a few houses built in the area. One night the young family traveled to a community harvest party they’d been looking forward to for weeks. There was music, dancing, food and drink and they had a wonderful time. When they finally made it home, they were as exhausted and happy as any young family could be. The couple tucked the children in their beds to sleep, and went outside for a walk to enjoy some quiet moments together under the starry sky. Still slightly drunk, the husband grabbed his young bride by the hand and swung her into a midnight dance under the stars… they were so happy and having so much fun they didn’t notice the smoke coming from the windows.

Unfortunately, the evening would end in tragedy. The small fire they’d left burning escaped its hearth and the house caught fire. The couple tried desperately to put it out, but with no fire department, no running water and a home made of wood, the home and their sleeping children perished. Heartbroken and distraught, the couple refused to rebuild or to sell the property. In fact, they left and were never heard from again.

As time passed,  the young city made a vow to respect the wished of the couple, and left the property untouched, save for a 10 ft. tall metal fence barricade. The couple had no descendants, so the city kept its promise, and the barricade stayed. At times, the neighbors in the houses that sprang up around the lot said they heard children playing, or laughing, and sometimes crying. There was a tree in the center of the lot that grew and grew, and someone made a swing for the ghost children. At night you could hear it moving back and forth in the wind, almost as if a child were playing on it.

By the time my friends and I made our way to the lot, it had been over a century since the house had burned. We’d heard the stories and had to see for ourselves. Late at night, we took turns standing on each others shoulders…the tree, yes, it was there and it was massive, but the swing was broken, just one chain still attached it to the branch. Interestingly, there were antique-looking toys strewn about the lot, a doll, a tricycle and what looked like a broken stroller. Some were new, as if locals were trying to appease the children. After those of us who dared to look had seen enough, we turned to leave, but not before a chided us for disturbing their spirits.

We swore we could hear the echoes of children laughing as we walked away….

Halloween Deliciousness For Foodies & Kids Alike

You could say that I have a minor issue with not “putting the cart before the horse” and that’s true for me today when it comes to food. My last post was all about candy, sweets and dessert, so I thought it would be good to round out the discussion with some more hearty fare.

When it comes to holiday meal planning, there are lots of sumptuous, savory dishes that taste amazing to adults and, with some creativity, are fun for kids to eat, too. In fact, they may love these Halloween inspired dinner dishes so much that they forego dessert altogether. Here are a few creepy concoctions that will bring some fun to family mealtimes, but still have the flavor adults love.

Hors d’oeuvres

For starters, hor d’oevres are a simple and appetite kicker. Offer your family or your party guests a cheese and cracker tray, but serve the dipping sauces in a beautiful holiday dish, or hollowed out pumpkins. Make a cheeseball, but form it into a pumpkin shape with a celery stick for the top. Another idea would be to use a round tray of mini carrots, using triangular ramekins full of dip in the center as the eyes of your jack-o-lantern, with a little celery/broccoli as the pumpkin top. Instead of “piggies in a blanket” use little sausages and make mini mummies, using cheese sauce to make eyes.

Dinner

The main thing to remember about Halloween dinner is that it is all in your presentation. By taking your favorite recipes and tweaking them with some gothic flair, your dishes will be tasty and apropos for the holiday. Turn your signature rib dish into a skeleton, or add toppings to your lasagna in that depict a creepy face or hand.

Make your fetuccini alfredo, plate the noodles onto a “bed of grass” made of steamed asparagus and brocolli, and then shape the pasta into a mummy. I bet your hubby won’t mind the extra festivities if it tastes good and he really won’t mind it if you serve it all up in your beer wench costume.

As long as you are having fun, you give just about any recipe a Halloween twist. Don’t stress about it, if it doesn’t fit into your schedule, don’t worry!

There’s always next year, right? In the meantime, if you want to throw a holiday dinner party or a fun family meal, now you’ve got a few tricks to get started.

Bon appetit! Oh, and check out the video below for some more ideas on presentation!

Trick-Or-Treat, Give Me Something Good to Eat

“Candy is nature’s way for making up for Monday’s.”

Photo via onecharmingparty.com

Halloween is nearly upon us and that means we’re getting closer to one of my favorite parts of the holiday: CANDY!

I like to start the month of October off with a candy expedition to “taste test” the best treats out there. This usually devolves into a chocolate eating binge, but we can’t have kids eating candy that isn’t delicious on Halloween now, can we? It’s all in the name of research. It’s scientific. Therefore, I take my duties seriously.

First off, I did an informal survey of some school children on their candy preferences and, most of them told me they preferred almost any candy, but they had a few specific favorites.

Treats that got a toothless grin and a big thumbs up included bubblegum filled lollipops, mini chocolate candy bars, caramel apples, (well, the big ones if you’re handing them out) popcorn balls, sugar cookies and Halloween themed treats like gummy worms or chocolate eyeballs.

Candy that didn’t fare as well included things like hard tack candy,  “Dots”, and although they love to use it on people as a prank, most of them didn’t like to eat those super spicy or sour candies that cause a tastebud apocalypse.

Since I’m a firm believer in enjoying things…bit of a hedonist, I guess, and I enjoy making others feel special, too. So, I like to go to the extra effort to make my Halloween treats special for those trick-or-treaters. If you’re a young parent, you’re likely so busy making treats for the class party or finding that perfectly inspired candy costume, that you probably don’t have much time to make homemade treats. No worries! Those kids are perfectly content with store-bought Halloween goodies. I’m an emptynester, so I can easily waste an afternoon devising delicious yummies.

My favorite treat to make for my grandkids is Halloween cupcakes, since they are so versatile. You can take a cupcake and with a little creativity, turn it into Frankenstien, a witch, black cat, owl, vampire, or whatever your little heart desires. The following cupcake images I found around the web, and they are pinned to my Pinterest Halloween Treats board, so you can head there if you’d like the original recipes. At the end of the day on Halloween, if you haven’t gotten too much of a sugar high already, my personal favorite Halloween goodie is still a classic…a steaming mug of hot spiced cider and a warm doughnut. Even so, I think I always want candy.

Spook Alleys: The Benefits of Being Brave

Let me start off by saying, “HELLO!? HAVE YOU GUYS NOTICED?! IT’S ONLY NINE DAYS UNTIL HALLOWEEN!”

OK, now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, allow me to proceed. Sometimes I feel like Linus waiting all night in the pumpkin patch for the Great Pumpkin, while everyone else loses the faith.

Hey, aren’t you going to wait and greet the Great Pumpkin? Huh? It won’t be long now. If the Great Pumpkin comes, I’ll still put in a good word for you! Good grief! I said “if”! I meant, “when” he comes!  I’m doomed. One little slip like that could cause the Great Pumpkin to pass you by. Oh, Great Pumpkin, where are you?

–Linus, “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”

I know, most of you are as excited as I am, if the lines to all of the local Halloween stores and boutiques are a While waiting in line for tickets to one of those kid-friendly pumpkin patch, corn maze, fun land attractions, I was talking to one of my girlfriends about how these events have become so kid-friendly, they’re almost bit dull for the adults.

Sure, I love watching my grand kids play on the kiddie games, pet animals at the petting zoo and drink cider by a warm bonfire. But, with so few adult related activities, the grown-ups are just, well, bored. Hayrides at sunset are lovely, don’t get me wrong, but nearly every activity involved sitting or watching, unless you happen to be a kid. That doesn’t mean all holiday revelry need revolved around those pint-sized candy consumers. My girlfriend and I decided we needed a pre-Halloween adrenaline rush to get us old gals livened up. Enter my personal favorite Halloween event: the essential tour of Halloween Spook Alleys.

The spook alley love affair started for me as a kid. My parents drove us out to an old farm in the middle of nowhere, late at night. The spook alley started off ingeniously by separating the parties (briefly) by a seeming accident. Suddenly, you’re seven years old, all alone in a rickety old barn, and the only light is at the far end of the barn…the only way to get out is to walk through it. Like most seven year old little girls, I was convinced I was going to die. But, I mustered up the courage, and started walking. And, just when I thought I had made it to the end home free, of course, a masked maniac jumps out from behind a deserted car, his chainsaw roars to life and I scream and run…right into the arms of my mom, who immediately starts laughing. Oh, he scared me, too, she said. Once it was apparent that it was a ruse, that you could safely have the dickens scared out of you and live, I was hooked.

There are few things in this culture that give Americans much chance to get their blood pumping…we are comfort creatures. We have comfy couches and cars, we don’t have to cook our own food, and when we do break into a run, it’s usually not because we’re being chased. To that, I say, one antidote is a trip to a few spook alleys. Take a chance…shake off the fear and complacency, and bring back a little of the fearless wild kid inside you. The worst that could happen is you wind up getting pictured looking like the people freaking out below, but even that should give you a hearty laugh. Big or small, taking steps out of your comfort zone is good for all of us…even that long lost seven-year-old girl shaking in her Disney Princess costume.

Costume Ideas For Your Pets

Here it is, just a few days from Halloween, and I have have neglected my favorite people: my pets!

You may think I’m nuts, but I love to dress my dog and cat up in pet costumes for Halloween. And, apparently, I’m not the only one. According to Time Magazine , Americans spend a staggering $370 million on pet costumes each year, which is just under what they spend on costumes for their children.

Here's my dog trying on one of her many costumes. Cute, eh?

My dog fell asleep in costume, so I don't think it was too traumatic for her.

Hmmm, maybe our pets are better behaved than our children? Who knows! What I do know, is that like the rest of you, I’m a sucker for a pooch in a costume, and it sounds like the rest of you probably are, too.

It’s funny, had I seen my parents putting a costume on the family dog as a child, I would have assumed that they had completely lost all connection to reality. Fast forward a few decades and pets in costume are as common as anything and no one seems any crazier…well, not too much crazier anyway.  Yorkies running around in lederhosens, border collies in tutus, and bulldogs dressed up as Marilyn Monroe just make me grin.

I’m not an expert in dog or cat language, but my dog sort of prances a bit when we put in her in a cute little outfit. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen many lizards, snakes of turtles in costume, but I’d sure like to!

If you’re thinking of dressing your little Fifi in a sparkling ensemble that would make Paris Hilton envious, just remember to try to keep the time in costume short. Although most pets love the extra attention, if they seem to have had enough of the outfit, give them a break…animals need to be respected because they are still animals who will defend themselves if they feel the need. But, most of the time costumes are tolerated and  they’ll love you even if you do make them look ridiculous once a year. That’s just what pets do….love you anyway.

If you don’t have a pet, there are always great pets that need a good home, and then you can join the People Who Put Their Pets in Costumes Club. That’s not really a club, but it should be.

Happy Costume Wearing Furry Friends!
